Hesperia was built for cars. Main Street, Bear Valley Road, Hesperia Road and Ranchero Road are wide, fast arterials with long gaps between signalized crosswalks, and many residential streets still have no sidewalks or street lights. People walk along the shoulder to reach the bus stops on Main Street and Hesperia Road, cross mid-block near the schools and shopping centers at Main and Escondido, and walk home after dark on roads where drivers routinely run 10 to 15 mph over the limit.

1. Get medical care the same day, even if you think you are fine. Adrenaline hides injuries, and a gap between the crash and the first visit is the first thing an adjuster uses against you.
2. Call 911 and get the report number. Crashes on the I-15, US-395 and the state routes are handled by the CHP Victorville Area office; crashes on city streets by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Hesperia Station.
3. Photograph the vehicle and its plate, the crosswalk or the spot where you were hit, the signals, the lighting, your injuries and your clothing. Get the driver’s license, registration and insurance, and the names and numbers of witnesses. Look for businesses or homes with cameras facing the street.
4. Do not give a recorded statement to the other side’s insurer, and do not post about the crash on social media. You are not required to give a statement, and anything you say is used to reduce the claim.
5. Report the crash to your own auto insurer if you or anyone in your household has a policy. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage follows the person, not the car, and it is often the only real source of recovery when the driver is uninsured or fled.
6. Keep every bill, pharmacy receipt, work note and invoice, and write down what you remember of the crash while it is fresh — the time, the weather, what the other driver said.
