Man, 24, Killed in Rollover Crash on 118 Freeway in Chatsworth Identified
California’s Basic Speed Law, Vehicle Code 22350, prohibits driving at a speed that is unsafe for the current road, weather, and traffic conditions, even when that speed is at or below the posted limit. Rollover crashes like this one on the 118 Freeway are frequently linked to a driver going too fast for a curve, wet pavement, or nighttime visibility. When CHP investigators determine that speed was a factor, the at-fault driver can be held civilly liable for injuries and death caused by the crash, separate from any traffic citation.
Under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60, the surviving family members of someone killed in a crash like Aaron Shields may bring a wrongful death claim against the driver found responsible. The law allows a spouse, children, or other qualifying relatives to recover damages for funeral costs, lost financial support, and the loss of their loved one’s companionship. These claims exist independently of any investigation CHP may conduct into the crash.
