A 64-year-old Fresno motorcyclist has been identified as the man killed in a nighttime crash on North Avenue west of Minnewawa Avenue, in a rural stretch of eastern Fresno County. Gregory Hansen was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound around 9:00 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, when he struck a bicycle trailer being towed by a local resident who was riding without lights in the dark. Hansen was thrown from the motorcycle and rushed to Community Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. The bicyclist was not struck and was not injured in the crash. The California Highway Patrol says its investigation into the collision remains active.

According to YourCentralValley.com (KSEE24/CBS47), the Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Gregory Hansen, a Fresno resident, several days after the crash occurred. The outlet reported that Hansen was traveling westbound on North Avenue when his motorcycle struck the trailer, throwing him from the bike. CHP said the case remains under investigation and that no citations had been announced as of the report. The bicyclist involved was not injured, according to the outlet.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code Section 21201 requires every bicycle operated at night to be equipped with a working front lamp visible from at least 300 feet, plus rear reflectors or lighting visible from a distance, precisely to prevent nighttime collisions like this one. When a cyclist rides after dark without proper lighting, other road users, including motorcyclists, may not see them or anything they are towing in time to react. Investigators are examining whether the trailer’s lack of lights contributed to this fatal collision.

California Vehicle Code Section 21650 requires drivers, including bicyclists, to travel on the right half of the roadway, with only limited exceptions. Riding against the flow of traffic, as the bicyclist reportedly did here, sharply increases the risk of a head-on or side-impact collision because oncoming motorists have far less time to see and react to a rider or trailer ahead. CHP has not yet said how this factor and the darkness combined to cause Hansen’s death.
