If you were hurt in a car accident in Moorpark, get medical care today, get the Moorpark Police or CHP report number, and call a lawyer before you give the other driver’s insurer a statement or accept an offer. Beverly Law’s Moorpark car accident lawyers take over the claim — the report, the medical records, the vehicle repair and every call from the insurance company — so you can focus on recovering.
Moorpark’s own streets are relatively safe, but the roads around it are where people get hurt: the 118 at freeway speed, Los Angeles Avenue where that traffic meets signals and left turns, the 118/23 interchange at rush hour, and two-lane roads like Grimes Canyon and Broadway where a head-on crash — like the suspected-DUI crash in our own coverage — leaves no room to escape. Speed-related crashes are Moorpark’s weak spot in the state’s 2023 rankings.
Beverly Law’s office is at 4929 Wilshire Blvd, Suite 960, Los Angeles, CA 90010, about 45 miles from Moorpark via the 118 and the 405. We represent Moorpark and Ventura County clients by phone, video and WhatsApp, and we meet in person in Ventura County by appointment; most clients never need to drive to Los Angeles. Call 1 (877) 427-2752 (24/7) or message us on WhatsApp in English or Spanish.

Why Car Crashes Happen in Moorpark
The roads where Moorpark crashes cluster
Four roads account for most serious Moorpark crashes. SR-118 carries commuters and trucks between Simi Valley and the 23 at freeway speed and becomes Los Angeles Avenue through town, where drivers still moving fast meet signals, driveways and left turns. SR-23 backs up at the 118 interchange every evening, producing rear-end crashes. Grimes Canyon Road and Broadway Road are two-lane canyon roads with blind curves and no median — the setting for head-on and DUI crashes. Tierra Rejada Road, Moorpark Avenue and Spring Road carry the local traffic to schools, Moorpark College and the Metrolink station, with left-turn and red-light crashes at the signals.
Moorpark is a small city, and its numbers are small: the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 82 people killed or injured in Moorpark crashes in 2023, ranking it 69th of 93 California cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst. Its one weak spot is speed — 18 speed-related injury crashes put it 34th of 93, in the worse half of the group — along with 6 motorcyclist victims and 81 DUI arrests in the year (OTS Crash Rankings, 2023). The serious crashes around Moorpark tend to happen on the fast roads at its edges: SR-118, SR-23, Grimes Canyon Road and Los Angeles Avenue.
Alcohol is a recurring factor on the roads around Moorpark: the city recorded 81 DUI arrests in 2023, and the Moorpark crash in our coverage involved a suspected DUI driver.
Recent Moorpark and Ventura County crashes we have covered
- CHP officer and passenger seriously injured in a head-on crash with a suspected DUI driver on Grimes Canyon Road near Moorpark (August 2026)
- Firefighter seriously injured by a suspected DUI driver on the 118 Freeway in Simi Valley (September 2026)
- Car crashes into a café on Tierra Rejada Road in Simi Valley, killing a pedestrian and injuring five (September 2026)
- Two killed and five hurt in a seven-vehicle crash on Victoria Avenue in Oxnard (September 2026)
- Driver ejected and injured in a suspected DUI crash on Olivas Park Drive in Ventura (September 2026)
Where the injured are treated — and where the case is filed
The most serious injuries go to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura or Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks — both Level II trauma centers about 20 to 30 minutes from Moorpark. If a lawsuit is needed it is filed in the Ventura County Superior Court, Hall of Justice, 800 South Victoria Avenue, Ventura, CA 93009.
Moorpark contracts its policing to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office (Moorpark Police Department), which writes the report for crashes on city streets. On SR-118, SR-23 and the unincorporated roads around the city — Grimes Canyon Road, Broadway Road, the stretch of Los Angeles Avenue outside city limits — the report comes from the CHP Moorpark Area office. We pull the report for our clients at no cost.
What California Law Says About Car Accidents
Negligence — Civil Code § 1714
Civil Code § 1714 makes every driver responsible for injuries caused by a lack of ordinary care: speeding, crossing the center line, running a red light, an unsafe lane change, following too closely or looking at a phone. Violating a Vehicle Code section is “negligence per se” — the violation itself proves the breach, and the CHP or Sheriff’s report usually names it.
Shared fault — Li v. Yellow Cab Co. (1975)
California uses pure comparative negligence (Li v. Yellow Cab Co. (1975) 13 Cal.3d 804). Fault is split in percentages and your recovery is reduced by your share — never eliminated. If your damages are $200,000 and you were 25% at fault, you recover $150,000. Adjusters know this and try to inflate your percentage; a recorded statement is their main tool for doing it.
Deadlines — CCP § 335.1, § 338 and Gov. Code § 911.2
Two years from the crash to file for injuries (CCP § 335.1), three years for property damage (CCP § 338). If a City of Moorpark or Ventura County vehicle, a Caltrans road condition on the 118 or 23, or a dangerous county road was involved, you must present a government claim within six months (Gov. Code § 911.2) before you can sue.
Insurance minimums since 2025 — SB 1107 — and your UM/UIM coverage
As of January 1, 2025, every California driver must carry at least $30,000 per person / $60,000 per accident in liability coverage and $15,000 for property damage (SB 1107). A trauma admission at Ventura County Medical Center can exceed that in a day. When the at-fault driver has only the minimum, no insurance or fled the scene, your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (Ins. Code § 11580.2) often becomes the main recovery. Using it does not raise your premiums for a crash that was not your fault.
Distracted and drunk driving — Vehicle Code §§ 23123.5, 23152 — and punitive damages
Holding a phone while driving violates Veh. Code § 23123.5; driving at 0.08% or above violates Veh. Code § 23152. Phone records and the DUI arrest file are evidence we subpoena. When the other driver was drunk, Taylor v. Superior Court (1979) 24 Cal.3d 890 allows punitive damages, which the driver pays personally.
Hit-and-run — Vehicle Code §§ 20001 and 20002
Leaving the scene of an injury crash is a felony under Veh. Code § 20001 (§ 20002 covers property damage). Report it to the CHP or Moorpark Police immediately, give them any partial plate or description, and open a claim under your own UM coverage — the insurer must treat an unidentified hit-and-run driver as uninsured once the crash is reported to police within 24 hours and there was physical contact with the other vehicle.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Moorpark
Eight steps that protect your claim
- Call 911. If anyone is hurt, ask for paramedics; go to the ER or urgent care the same day even if you feel “just sore”.
- Get the report number. The CHP Moorpark Area office handles the 118, the 23 and county roads like Grimes Canyon; the Ventura County Sheriff’s Moorpark Police Department handles city streets.
- Photograph both cars, plates, the intersection or roadway position, skid marks, traffic signals and your injuries. Screenshot the time and location.
- Exchange license, registration and insurance information, and get witness names and numbers. Look for nearby businesses with cameras.
- Do not apologize or discuss fault at the scene, and do not give the other driver’s insurer a recorded statement.
- Do not sign anything the insurer sends you.
- File the SR-1 with the DMV within 10 days of any crash with injury, death or more than $1,000 in damage (Veh. Code § 16000).
- Call Beverly Law before you accept any offer. The consultation is free, 24/7, in English or Spanish.
If the other driver fled, tell the police within 24 hours and tell us: uninsured-motorist coverage usually applies.
How Beverly Law Handles Moorpark Car Accident Cases
We deal with the insurer so you are not pushed into a lowball offer
The first offer arrives before anyone knows how badly you are hurt, and signing it ends the claim. Our team includes former insurance adjusters who know how carriers value Ventura County car accident claims and what they leave out. We take every call from the insurance company so you never have to.
What we do in the first two weeks
- Order the Moorpark Police (Ventura County Sheriff) or CHP report and your 911 records.
- Send preservation letters for video, vehicle data and documents before they are erased.
- Help you get your vehicle repaired or valued, and a rental where coverage allows.
- Refer you to doctors and specialists in Ventura County who treat on a lien, so care does not wait for a settlement.
- In some cases, help arrange pre-settlement funding so bills do not force a bad decision.
- Open the claim with every insurer that may owe coverage, including your own UM/UIM policy.
Timeline: what to expect
Most Moorpark car accident claims settle once treatment is finished and a complete demand goes out — often within a few months. If the insurer will not pay what the case is worth, we file in Ventura County Superior Court; litigated cases commonly take one to two years and most still settle before trial.
Deadlines run from the day of the crash: two years for injury (CCP § 335.1) and only six months to present a government claim if the City of Moorpark, Ventura County, Caltrans or a road defect is involved (Gov. Code § 911.2).

Moorpark Car Accident FAQ
How much is a car accident case worth in Moorpark?
It depends on the severity and permanence of the injury, the medical bills and future treatment, lost income, how clear fault is and how much insurance is available. A soft-tissue case with a few months of treatment and a minimum-limits driver is valued very differently from a surgery case with a commercial policy. We tell you honestly what the realistic range is after we have the report and the records — not before.
Should I accept the insurance company’s first offer?
Almost never. First offers arrive before the full extent of treatment is known and are designed to close the file cheaply. Once you sign a release, the claim is over even if you need surgery later. Have the offer reviewed first — the review is free.
Do I have to go to court?
Usually not. Most Moorpark car accident claims settle with the insurer before a lawsuit is filed, and most filed cases settle before trial. If a lawsuit is needed it is filed at the Ventura County Superior Court’s Hall of Justice, 800 South Victoria Avenue in Ventura, and we handle every hearing. You would only testify at a deposition or trial, and we prepare you for both.
Can I still claim if I was partly at fault?
Yes. California follows pure comparative negligence (Li v. Yellow Cab Co., 1975). Your recovery is reduced by your percentage of fault but never eliminated — a person found 40% at fault still recovers 60% of their damages. Insurers routinely inflate the victim’s share, which is one reason not to give a recorded statement.
How long does a case take?
A claim with clear fault and finished treatment can settle in three to six months. Serious injuries, disputed fault or several insurers take longer, and a case filed in Ventura County Superior Court commonly takes one to two years. We do not rush a settlement before your doctors know whether you will need future care.
Do you handle cases in Spanish?
Yes. Beverly Law’s intake team, case managers and attorneys work in Spanish and English every day. Calls, texts, WhatsApp and documents can all be in Spanish, and this page has a Spanish version (the ES button at the top).
