A woman was killed and five other people were hurt after a Tesla jumped a curb and slammed into the outdoor patio of an Urbane Cafe in Simi Valley, California, on the afternoon of Monday, June 29, 2026. The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in a Target-anchored shopping center near Tierra Rejada Road and Madera Road, according to Simi Valley police. The victim, a 79-year-old Agoura Hills woman, was walking on the sidewalk outside the restaurant when she was struck and pinned beneath the vehicle. The Tesla driver, a 64-year-old woman with four juvenile passengers in the car, had been trying to turn out of a parking lot travel lane when the vehicle went over the curb instead of completing the turn.
According to ABC7 Los Angeles (KABC), Simi Valley police Sgt. Rick Morton said investigators are still trying to determine whether speed, mechanical failure or driver impairment caused the Tesla to miss its turn and strike the pedestrian before crashing into the cafe’s dining area. The outlet reported that the driver and one of her four juvenile passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while the other three juveniles were released to family members at the scene. Police said there is no evidence that drugs or alcohol were a factor, and Morton said the crash does not appear to have been intentional. The victim’s name had not been released as of the report, and the investigation into what caused the Tesla to leave its lane remains ongoing.
