Overnight crash leaves 2 trapped under big rig in Los Angeles
California Vehicle Code Section 21703 requires drivers to maintain a safe following distance and prohibits following another vehicle more closely than is reasonable given speed and traffic conditions. Rear-end collisions like this one, where a passenger vehicle strikes the back of a big rig, often raise questions about whether the trailing driver kept a safe distance or was traveling too fast for conditions. Truck drivers and fleet operators can also share liability if the rig was stopped or moving slowly without adequate lighting or reflective markings.
California Vehicle Code Section 22350, the state’s basic speed law, requires drivers to operate at a speed that is safe for existing conditions, including darkness, traffic and visibility. Overnight crashes like this one often hinge on whether a driver was traveling too fast to see and react to a large vehicle ahead. Violations of the basic speed law can support a finding of negligence in a subsequent civil claim.
