A 15-year-old Paso Robles High School student was killed Sunday night when the car he was riding in left El Pomar Drive and struck a tree in an unincorporated area east of Templeton. The teen was ejected from the back seat of the vehicle and died at the scene. The 18-year-old driver and a second 15-year-old passenger, both Paso Robles residents, were injured and taken to a hospital for treatment. The California Highway Patrol’s Templeton office is investigating why the westbound Toyota Camry left the roadway.
According to the San Luis Obispo Tribune, the crash happened around 9:59 p.m. Sunday on El Pomar Drive just west of Vaquero Road. The Tribune reported that CHP investigators do not currently suspect alcohol or drugs as factors, though the cause remains under investigation. News Channel 3-12 (KEYT) reported the driver and surviving passenger were taken to Adventist Health Sierra Vista in San Luis Obispo for treatment.

Teen killed in car crash identified as Paso Robles High School student
California’s Basic Speed Law, Vehicle Code 22350, prohibits driving at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent for the road’s width, curves, traffic and visibility, even if that speed is under the posted limit. Investigators noted the Camry involved in this crash was traveling at an unknown speed on a rural two-lane road when it left the pavement. When speed unsafe for conditions contributes to a single-vehicle crash, it can support a negligence claim against the at-fault driver.
