An 82-year-old woman was left in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in a marked crosswalk in downtown Santa Monica on the evening of Thursday, September 24, 2026. The collision happened at approximately 5:47 p.m. at the intersection of 5th Street and Wilshire Boulevard, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. She was walking southbound in the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection when a vehicle making a left turn from southbound 5th Street onto eastbound Wilshire Boulevard struck her. Santa Monica Fire Department paramedics transported her to a local hospital, where she remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Friday morning. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, and police said impairment does not appear to have been a factor.
Patch reported that Santa Monica police, through Lieutenant Lewis Gilmour, confirmed the woman was struck while lawfully crossing at the intersection and that the case remains under active investigation. According to Patch, officers have not released additional details about the driver or announced any citations, and the department said further confirmed information will be released as it becomes available. The outlet noted that the 5th Street and Wilshire Boulevard corridor in downtown Santa Monica carries heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic, especially during the evening commute. No arrests had been announced as of the time of Patch’s report.
