A bicyclist was injured Saturday afternoon after colliding with a San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) bus outside the Forest Hill Station in San Francisco. The San Francisco Fire Department said crews were dispatched at 2:41 p.m. to the station on Laguna Honda Boulevard near Woodside Avenue after multiple callers reported the crash. The bicyclist was injured and taken to a trauma center for treatment. The Forest Hill Station is served by Muni’s 36, 43, 44 and 52 bus lines, and service in the area was disrupted while crews cleared the scene.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, multiple callers reported that the bicyclist had allegedly run a red light and that part of his lower leg was run over in the collision. First responders arrived within minutes and helped free and treat the injured rider before transporting him to a trauma center. Muni’s transit agency did not immediately respond to the Chronicle’s request for comment. Records from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency confirm the Muni-involved collision disrupted the northbound 44-O’Shaughnessy and 52-Excelsior lines around Forest Hill Station from 2:40 to 4:12 p.m. that day.

What the Law Says

California treats bicyclists as drivers of vehicles under the law, meaning cyclists share the same rights and must obey the same rules of the road as motorists and transit operators. When a Muni bus and a bicyclist collide, fault can turn on which party violated basic right-of-way and signal rules under this statute. Muni, as a public transit operator, is also held to a heightened standard of care toward all road users, including cyclists sharing its route.

State law requires that any driver or bicyclist facing a red traffic signal come to a complete stop before entering the intersection. Witnesses in this case told fire crews the bicyclist had allegedly run the red light before the collision, though that account has not been officially confirmed by police. If a red-light violation is established, it could be a key factor in determining fault and any resulting comparative negligence between the cyclist and the bus operator.
