A man died late Monday night after his vehicle overturned and burst into flames on southbound Hazel Avenue near Rancho Cordova. California Highway Patrol officers rushed to the scene just after 10:30 p.m. but were unable to free the trapped driver before the fire became too intense. Two CHP officers suffered minor burn injuries while attempting the rescue and were treated at a hospital before being released. The crash remains under investigation, and CHP said witnesses reported that speed may have been a factor.
According to FOX40 Sacramento, CHP officers responded to reports of the crash and found the car already overturned and on fire, with the driver trapped inside. The outlet reported that speed is a suspected factor based on witness statements, though investigators have not said whether drugs or alcohol played a role. FOX40 Sacramento also reported that the two injured officers were among those who tried to rescue the driver before the flames made it impossible. The identity of the man who died has not been released.
