UPDATE — October 24, 2026

A 2013 head-on crash on Golden State Boulevard north of Avenue 20 in Madera County, California, is back in the news after Kenya moved to extradite the driver convicted in it. According to the California Highway Patrol’s account at the time, the driver allegedly was speeding when he crossed the double yellow line and hit a car driven by a 19-year-old from Chowchilla. A 16-year-old passenger in that car was killed, and the driver and two other occupants were injured and taken to local hospitals.

Nairobi Wire reports that Kenya has extradited the fugitive after 13 years. Citizen Digital reports that the man was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated under California Penal Code Section 191.5(a), missed his October 2013 sentencing date, and was arrested in Runda, Nairobi, on September 9, 2026. Kenya’s prosecutors secured an extradition order so he can be returned to the United States for sentencing.

A man convicted in a 2011 head-on crash on Golden State Boulevard in Madera County, California, has been returned to the state after 13 years as a fugitive. According to court records cited by news outlets, the driver was allegedly intoxicated when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. A passenger in the other vehicle was killed, and three other people were injured. A Madera County jury convicted him of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in 2013, but he fled to Kenya before his sentencing hearing.

Nairobi Wire reported that Kenyan authorities handed the man over to U.S. officials in Nairobi and that he was flown to California after his arrest on September 9, 2026. CBS Sacramento, citing FBI Sacramento, reported that he was returned on October 23, 2026, and that the crash killed one passenger and severely injured three other people. The reports do not say whether a new sentencing date has been set or whether he faces additional charges for fleeing. The case illustrates that families harmed by drunk drivers may still pursue civil claims for medical costs and other losses, separate from the criminal case.

What the Law Says

California Penal Code 191.5 defines gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, which applies when a person drives under the influence and kills another through gross negligence. It is a serious felony and was the offense of conviction in this case. A criminal conviction is separate from, and does not by itself resolve, a victim’s civil claim.

California Vehicle Code 23152 prohibits driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or more. Violations can serve as evidence of negligence in a civil injury or wrongful death claim. Families may have limited time to file, so speaking with a lawyer early matters; we work on a no fee unless we win basis.
