A woman in her 30s was killed early Sunday, September 20, 2026, after her car struck a boulder in the center median of southbound Interstate 280 in unincorporated Hillsborough, San Mateo County. California Highway Patrol officers responded to the area around 2 a.m. but initially found no sign of a collision in the darkness. The wrecked black Volkswagen Tiguan was not discovered in the median ditch until roughly 7:30 a.m., hours after the crash occurred. The woman, the vehicle’s sole occupant, died at the scene, and her identity has not been publicly released.

According to KTLA, CHP Officer Sophie Lu said investigators still do not know how the vehicle ended up in the freeway median or whether drowsiness or impairment played a role in the crash. Hoodline reported that the extended gap between the initial 2 a.m. response and the vehicle’s discovery at 7:30 a.m. remains unexplained in the available report. No road or lane closures were reported in connection with the crash. CHP said the investigation into the cause of the collision remains active.

What the Law Says

California’s Basic Speed Law, Vehicle Code 22350, requires drivers to travel at a speed no greater than is reasonable and prudent given the weather, visibility, traffic, and the road’s surface and width, and never faster than conditions allow, even where a posted limit is higher. A driver who loses control on a dark freeway median, as allegedly happened here, may be found to have violated this standard if speed or attentiveness contributed to the crash. This statute frequently underpins civil liability in single-vehicle collision cases.

Government Code 835 allows an injured party to hold a public entity liable when a dangerous condition of public property, such as a boulder or unprotected obstruction left in a freeway median, contributes to a crash, provided the entity had notice of the hazard and enough time to fix or warn about it. Caltrans and other public agencies are responsible for maintaining freeway medians in a reasonably safe condition. Families of victims in fixed-object collisions like this one often examine whether the roadway design or median maintenance played a role.
