A UC Davis student was killed in April after the bicycle he was riding collided with a car on Hutchison Drive, near the West Village housing area on the university’s West Campus in Davis, California. University officials publicly released the police investigation report on the fatal crash on September 17, 2026, more than five months after the collision. The report identifies the victim as Lincoln Wells Sabini, a sophomore in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Investigators say Sabini’s bicycle veered into the traffic lane for reasons that remain unknown, where it struck a vehicle traveling in the same direction. Sabini died at the scene.
According to CBS News Sacramento, the UC Davis Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team worked alongside the Davis Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and UC Santa Cruz to reconstruct the collision before closing the case. The outlet reported that the driver’s name was redacted from the released report and that the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office said it had not received a referral from UC Davis police, adding that charges against the driver do not appear likely. Sabini’s mother, Rucha Powers, told reporters she believes her son would not have left the bike lane unless an obstacle or hazard forced him into traffic, and the family is now pushing for protected bike lanes on Hutchison Drive. Authorities have not disclosed any additional details about what may have caused the bicycle to veer into the roadway.
