A 21-year-old motorcyclist from Hesperia died early Monday morning after a multi-vehicle crash on the westbound 60 Freeway near Mountain Avenue in Chino, California. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene around 5:55 a.m. on September 21, 2026, after the motorcycle collided with a truck and at least one other vehicle. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members have since identified him as Jared Payne and launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses.
According to VVNG (Victor Valley News), the crash shut down the HOV lane and two right-hand lanes of the westbound 60 Freeway, prompting a SigAlert and backing up traffic for hours before all lanes reopened by mid-morning. The collision was one of two fatal crashes reported on the same stretch of freeway within about 40 minutes that morning. The California Highway Patrol has not yet released the names of the other drivers involved or determined what caused the motorcycle to go down. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact CHP investigators.

GoFundMe Launched For Jared Payne, 21, Of Hesperia Killed In 60 Freeway Motorcycle Crash
California Vehicle Code 21658 requires drivers on a roadway with clearly marked traffic lanes to stay within a single lane and to change lanes only when it can be done safely. On a busy freeway like the 60, an unsafe or sudden lane change into a motorcyclist’s path can leave the rider almost no room to react. Violating this statute can serve as evidence of negligence in a civil claim brought by an injured motorcyclist or a victim’s family.
California’s basic speed law, Vehicle Code 22350, prohibits driving at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent given the traffic, weather, and roadway conditions, even if that speed is within the posted limit. Heavy truck traffic and reduced visibility during early-morning commute hours can turn an otherwise legal speed into an unsafe one. When investigators find that speed contributed to a crash, it can support a claim for damages against the at-fault driver.
