A young man, believed to be around 20 years old, suffered “significant injuries” after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley on the night of Friday, September 25, 2026, according to the Berkeley Scanner. The crash happened at approximately 10:10 p.m. on Telegraph Avenue between Derby and Parker streets, in the Southside neighborhood near UC Berkeley. The pedestrian reportedly lost consciousness after being struck by a vehicle traveling an estimated 25 to 30 mph and was rushed to Highland Hospital in Oakland under emergency “Code 3” transport. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, and police said there was no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved. Berkeley police closed Telegraph Avenue between Derby and Parker streets for several hours while officers investigated.
The Berkeley Scanner reported that the department’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team, which responds to serious and fatal collisions, was deployed to handle the case, and that initial findings suggested the pedestrian appeared to be using a crosswalk at the time of impact. Berkeley police issued a public advisory around 10:40 p.m. warning that “there is no vehicle or pedestrian access” to the closed stretch of Telegraph Avenue and urging drivers to use alternate routes. The Berkeley Police Department’s public alert system later confirmed that Telegraph Avenue had reopened between Parker and Derby streets, consistent with the Berkeley Scanner’s report that the roadway reopened around 1:30 a.m. As of the most recent reporting, the investigation into the cause of the collision remained active.
