Driver Hurt, Passenger Killed in Highway 41 Crash Near Atascadero, CA
A 42-year-old woman was injured and her 42-year-old passenger was killed after their car ran off Highway 41 south of Rocky Canyon Road near Atascadero late Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Authorities say the southbound 2003 Mercedes ML500 left the roadway, traveled down a dirt and grass embankment, and struck a concrete drainage wall around 10:08 p.m. Emergency crews extricated both women and rushed them to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, where the passenger later died from her injuries. The driver, from Ceres in Stanislaus County, survived the crash. The passenger’s identity has not been released as authorities work to notify her next of kin.
KSBY News reported that the California Highway Patrol has not yet determined why the vehicle crossed the roadway, and the crash remains under active investigation. According to the CHP’s Templeton Area office, cited by KSBY and confirmed by KEYT News Channel 3-12, alcohol and drugs are not currently suspected as contributing factors. Investigators have not said whether speed, road conditions, or a mechanical issue played a role.
