A driver was killed early Sunday morning after their Kia Forte crossed into oncoming traffic on State Route 160 near Antioch and collided head-on with a pickup truck. The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. near Sherman Island Cross Road, a stretch of the rural Delta highway that has seen a string of severe wrecks in recent years. Two people riding in the pickup truck were rushed to the hospital with injuries. California Highway Patrol officers shut down the highway for hours while they investigated the scene. Authorities have not yet said whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
According to Hoodline, the Kia Forte was traveling northbound on SR-160 when it crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a Ford F-250 pickup truck head-on. The outlet reported that the Kia’s driver, the vehicle’s only occupant, was killed in the crash, while the two occupants of the pickup were transported to a hospital with injuries of an unspecified severity. Hoodline cited the CHP’s South Sacramento office, which said it remains unclear whether impairment was a factor and that the collision remains under active investigation. The outlet noted the crash is the latest in a series of deadly wrecks clustered near Sherman Island Cross Road.

Kia Driver Killed on SR-160 Near Antioch in Latest Deadly Delta Highway Crash
California Vehicle Code Section 21650 requires drivers to keep to the right half of the roadway on two-way highways, precisely the rule investigators say was violated when the Kia crossed into oncoming traffic. Head-on collisions caused by a vehicle drifting or swerving into the opposite lane are among the deadliest types of crashes because the closing speeds of both vehicles combine, multiplying the force of impact. When a driver violates this basic rule of the road and kills or injures another motorist, they can be held civilly liable for the resulting damages regardless of any criminal charges CHP investigators may pursue.
Under California Code of Civil Procedure Section 377.60, the surviving family members of someone killed in a crash like this one may bring a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s estate or insurance. The law allows spouses, children, and certain other dependents to recover for the financial support, companionship, and care they have lost. Because the Kia driver in this crash did not survive, any wrongful death claim would typically be pursued against that driver’s insurance policy or estate rather than the driver personally.
