INVESTIGATION
The Antioch Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating the cause of the two-vehicle collision (case No. 26-8743) and is asking witnesses to come forward.

Two Liberty High School seniors were killed early Sunday, September 13, 2026, when the car they were riding in collided with another vehicle on Deer Valley Road near Balfour Road in Antioch, close to the Brentwood city line. Dominic Anthony Starkenberg Ferrari and Caden Kyle, both 17 and residents of nearby Discovery Bay, died at the scene after the silver Infiniti they were in collided with a white BMW just after midnight. A third teen riding in the Infiniti and the driver of the BMW were both taken to a hospital with injuries. The crash occurred on the border between Antioch and Brentwood, where Liberty High School students said the loss has shaken the campus community.

According to NBC Bay Area, the crash happened just after midnight Sunday when the Infiniti carrying the three teens collided with the BMW, and both vehicles left the roadway. The outlet reported that the BMW had allegedly fled a traffic stop by East Bay Regional Park District Police on August 7, and that a warrant had been issued for the vehicle before the crash. Antioch police said their Traffic Unit is still investigating what led the two cars to collide. Liberty High School made additional counseling available in the campus library Monday for students grappling with the loss of their classmates.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 22106 prohibits backing a vehicle on a highway unless the movement can be made with reasonable safety. A witness reportedly told investigators the Infiniti was reversing in the roadway just before the BMW struck it. If that account holds up, the maneuver could establish a violation of this statute and support a negligence claim against the driver who was backing up.

California Vehicle Code 10851 makes it a crime to drive or take a vehicle without the owner’s consent. The BMW involved in the Antioch crash had allegedly fled a traffic stop by East Bay Regional Park District Police weeks earlier, and a warrant had reportedly been issued for the vehicle before the fatal collision. A driver operating a stolen or wanted vehicle who causes a deadly crash can face both criminal exposure and civil liability to the victims’ families.
