A 22-year-old Redding man was killed late Friday night, September 25, 2026, when a suspected DUI driver crossed into oncoming traffic and struck his vehicle head-on on Dersch Road west of Mossom Lane near Anderson. The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. when a Chevrolet Silverado traveling eastbound veered into the westbound lane and collided with a Nissan Xterra. Both vehicles left the roadway and came to rest on the north shoulder, and the Nissan caught fire after impact. The Nissan’s driver died at the scene; his identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification. A 15-year-old Redding boy who was riding in the Nissan escaped the vehicle before it caught fire and suffered a broken wrist and clavicle.
According to KRCR, California Highway Patrol investigators say the Silverado’s driver, 23-year-old Onyz Young of Redding, got out of his truck and away from the fire before being arrested at the scene. Young suffered a broken leg in the crash. Investigators determined that alcohol and drugs were factors in the collision, KRCR reported, though no charges had been detailed as of the latest reporting. CHP’s own dispatch log confirms emergency crews responded to the crash on Dersch Road just before midnight and reported the vehicle fully engulfed in flames shortly after arrival. The investigation remains active.
