A pickup truck veered into a designated bicycle lane along Pacific Coast Highway near Solimar Beach, just north of Ventura, California, on the evening of June 11, 2026, striking three cyclists during their ride. Cyclists Kellie Standish, 33, of Bend, Oregon, and William Colby Tucker, 39, of Ventura, were killed, while their friend Annie Adams suffered serious injuries. California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene and arrested the driver, who was later charged with second-degree murder and driving under the influence causing injury. More than three months later, survivors and friends of the victims are still pushing local and state officials to redesign the dangerous stretch of highway.

According to the Ventura County Star, Adams and other friends of the victims formed a group called Safe Rec Ventura after the crash to advocate for protected bike lanes and other safety upgrades along PCH. The Camarillo Acorn reported that the group has submitted more than 250 letters to officials since July and presented its case to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors in early September, and that Caltrans has agreed to conduct a safety study of the corridor. Both outlets noted that the stretch of PCH between Emma Wood State Beach and the Santa Barbara County line has seen more than ten deaths and roughly three dozen injury crashes over the past 12 years. The driver has pleaded not guilty, and the case remains pending in Ventura County Superior Court.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 21208 requires cyclists traveling slower than surrounding traffic to ride within a marked bicycle lane, and by extension drivers must respect that lane rather than drift or merge into it without care. When a vehicle crosses into a bike lane and strikes a cyclist riding lawfully within it, the driver can be found civilly liable for the resulting injuries and deaths. Investigators typically use the position of the vehicle relative to the lane markings to help establish fault in these cases.

California Vehicle Code 23153 makes it a crime to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, through that impairment, cause injury to another person. A criminal conviction under this statute is not required to bring a civil injury claim, but a DUI arrest or charge stemming from the same crash is strong evidence of negligence in a wrongful death or personal injury lawsuit. Families of victims allegedly killed by an impaired driver can pursue compensation separately from any criminal case.
