A 16-year-old boy was killed and his 14-year-old sister was critically injured when a speeding car ran a stop sign and struck them as they crossed West 60th Street with their mother in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles. The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in the 5900 block of 10th Avenue. The boy died at the scene, while his sister was hospitalized with critical injuries, including a reported fractured pelvis. Investigators say the driver of a blue Nissan Sentra and a male passenger got out of the disabled car and fled on foot without stopping to help. No arrests have been made, and the Los Angeles Police Department is asking for the public’s help identifying the suspects.

According to ABC7 Los Angeles, the mother pulled her daughter to safety after the impact and was not struck by the vehicle herself. The outlet reported that neighbors have long complained about speeding on this residential stretch of 60th Street, with one resident saying drivers “won’t even slow down” at the stop sign where the crash occurred. ABC7 also reported that the city of Los Angeles has a standing $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in a fatal hit-and-run. The victims’ family has reportedly started a fundraiser to help cover medical and funeral costs.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code Section 20001 requires any driver involved in a collision that causes injury or death to immediately stop at the scene, identify themselves, and render reasonable aid. Fleeing the scene, as authorities allege happened here, is a criminal hit-and-run that can bring felony charges when a victim is seriously hurt or killed. Investigators are still actively searching for the driver and passenger who allegedly abandoned the disabled sedan and ran from the scene.

California Vehicle Code Section 21950 gives pedestrians the right of way when crossing within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, and requires drivers to exercise due care for pedestrian safety. Running a stop sign or speeding through an intersection where pedestrians are crossing, as neighbors and reports suggest happened here, is a direct violation of that duty. The statute also notes pedestrians must exercise reasonable care for their own safety, but a driver’s failure to yield or stop remains the central issue when a crossing pedestrian is struck.
