Two men were injured Saturday afternoon when a classic 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo collided with a tractor-trailer on Seventh Avenue in Victorville. The vintage car had been on display earlier that day at the Route 66 Car Show and Block Party in Old Town Victorville. Authorities say the Monte Carlo was turning from Sitting Bull Street onto Seventh Avenue when the driver lost control and struck the trailer being pulled by a big rig, with enough force to knock one of its tires loose into the roadway. Both occupants of the Monte Carlo were extricated from the wreckage and hospitalized, and Seventh Avenue was closed in both directions for hours while crews cleared the debris.
According to VVNG (Victor Valley News Group), the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said the driver of the Monte Carlo suffered major injuries and had to be extricated by fire crews before being transported to a trauma center; the passenger was also hospitalized. Hoodline reported that investigators had not yet determined what caused the driver to lose control before the impact, and the cause remained under investigation. Victorville City Public Works assisted deputies with the hard closure of Seventh Avenue between Nisqualli Road and Sitting Bull Street while the scene was cleared.

California law prohibits driving into the opposing lanes of a divided highway. Vehicle Code 21651 makes it unlawful to drive over, across, or within the dividing section separating two roadways, which investigators say is effectively what sent the Monte Carlo into the tractor-trailer’s path.
