Fort Bend County crash: 11-year-old dies after e-scooter collision near Katy, TX
An 11-year-old riding an e-scooter was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Roesner Road and Elk Ridge Lane in the Pine Mill Ranch subdivision near Katy on Thursday, September 10, 2026, just after 5 p.m. The child suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, but died the following afternoon. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, and the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what led to the collision. The crash has renewed concern among Katy-area parents about children riding e-scooters and e-bikes near busy roadways.
According to FOX 26 Houston, the child was crossing the intersection on an e-scooter when they collided with an oncoming vehicle, and first responders transported them by helicopter because of the severity of their injuries. ABC13 Houston reported that the child attended Tays Junior High School in the Katy Independent School District, which said it was providing support resources for students and staff following the death. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office has not released the child’s name and said the investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing. Texas Transportation Code Section 545.151 sets the right-of-way rules for drivers approaching or entering an intersection, requiring them to yield to traffic and crossing users already in the intersection. When a driver fails to see or yield to a child crossing on an e-scooter, that failure can support a negligence claim. Investigators will look at sight lines, speed and timing at Roesner Road and Elk Ridge Lane to determine who had the right-of-way.
Texas Transportation Code Section 551.352 gives a motor-assisted scooter operator the same rights and duties as a bicycle rider under the state’s traffic laws, including obeying traffic-control devices and yielding when required. It also means drivers must treat e-scooter riders like any other legitimate road user entitled to the same protections.
