Amarillo Man Killed in US 287 Crash Involving Pickup, Semi-Trailer
A 21-year-old Amarillo man was killed Friday afternoon when his pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer at the intersection of U.S. Highway 287 and FM 1912 in Potter County, just outside Amarillo, Texas. The tractor-trailer had reportedly been crossing the highway to turn onto U.S. 287 South when the pickup, traveling west, struck the trailer. The pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the truck driver was not injured. Part of U.S. 287 was shut down for several hours as crews worked the crash, with traffic rerouted onto Interstate 40.
According to ABC7 Amarillo (KVII-TV), the pickup driver has been identified as Ryan Lane Simpson, 21, of Amarillo, and the tractor-trailer driver as Juan Carlos Sanchez, 47, also of Amarillo; both were reportedly wearing seat belts. Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Cindy Barkley told NewsChannel 10 that the collision proved fatal for the pickup’s driver and that Texas Highway Patrol troopers are continuing to investigate exactly how the crash occurred. No citations had been announced as of the latest reports.
