A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Visalia, California, after a driver struck him and fled the scene without stopping to help. The collision happened Sunday evening, August 30, 2026, on Ferguson Avenue near Dinuba Boulevard. Responding officers found the man lying in the roadway and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver had already left before police arrived, launching an extensive search by the Visalia Police Department’s Traffic Unit.

According to GV Wire, investigators used Flock and Axon automated license plate reader systems, along with surveillance video that captured a maroon Honda sedan with heavy front-end damage near Houston Avenue and Santa Fe Street just minutes after the crash, to track down the vehicle. Police arrested 32-year-old Antonio Gaona Vasquez on Wednesday in the 200 block of Perez Street and booked him into the Tulare County Adult Pre-Trial Facility on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death. KMPH reported that Ferguson Avenue was closed for hours while officers processed the scene. The case remains under investigation.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 20001 requires any driver involved in a crash that causes death or injury to stop immediately, identify themselves, and render reasonable aid. Fleeing the scene of a fatal collision, as the driver in this case is accused of doing, is a felony punishable by state prison time. Prosecutors can also pursue enhanced penalties when a driver knew or should have known someone was seriously hurt and left anyway.

California’s Three Feet for Safety Act, Vehicle Code 21760, requires drivers to leave at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist traveling in the same direction. If a driver cannot safely provide that distance, the law requires them to slow down and pass only when it is safe to do so. Violating this distance requirement is often a key factor investigators examine in bicycle collision cases.
