A 23-year-old man died after a two-vehicle crash in the West Long Beach neighborhood of Long Beach, California, on the night of August 15, 2026. Long Beach police say the driver of a 2017 Cadillac sedan was heading westbound on Anaheim Street and attempted a U-turn near Hayes Avenue when he was struck by an eastbound 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck at about 8:38 p.m. The Cadillac driver was rushed to a hospital, where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries on August 28, nearly two weeks after the collision. He was later identified as Alejandro Munoz of Los Angeles.

According to the Long Beach Post, the driver of the Silverado stayed at the scene and cooperated fully with responding officers. The Long Beach Police Department’s Collision Investigation Detail says investigators do not believe impaired or distracted driving contributed to the crash, though the inquiry remains open. Detective Van Holland is asking anyone with information to come forward. The crash was the city’s 31st traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 34 recorded at the same point last year.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 22100.5 restricts U-turns in business districts, generally allowing them only at intersections or at designated openings on divided highways. Anaheim Street runs through a commercial corridor of West Long Beach, and investigators are examining whether the Cadillac driver’s U-turn near Hayes Avenue complied with this restriction. Drivers who turn outside a permitted location can be held liable for resulting collisions.

Vehicle Code 21801 requires a driver completing a U-turn to yield the right-of-way to all oncoming traffic close enough to pose a hazard during the maneuver. Because the Cadillac was turning across the path of the eastbound Silverado, this statute is central to determining fault in the crash. A driver who fails to yield during a U-turn can be found negligent even if the oncoming vehicle was traveling within the speed limit.
