Nine people were injured Wednesday evening after a Fresno County Sheriff’s Office patrol car crashed into a Fresno Area Express (FAX) bus at the intersection of M Street and Stanislaus Street in downtown Fresno. Two deputies had been chasing a driver who was allegedly traveling the wrong way on M Street near Tuolumne Street when their patrol vehicle collided with the side of the bus. The two deputies suffered minor injuries, and seven bus passengers, including the driver, were taken to hospitals as a precaution. The wrong-way driver did not stop and remains at large.

According to GV Wire and ABC30, the Fresno Police Department is now investigating the crash and reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to identify the driver who fled. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said the incident is a reminder for motorists, especially those unfamiliar with downtown Fresno’s one-way streets, to watch carefully for wrong-way traffic. No road closures have been publicly confirmed, and no fatalities were reported in the collision.

What the Law Says

California law allows an authorized emergency vehicle, like a sheriff’s patrol car, to exceed certain traffic rules while responding to an emergency or pursuing a suspected violator, but only when using a siren and emergency lighting as required. Vehicle Code Section 21056 makes clear that this exemption never excuses a deputy from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of everyone on the road. If a pursuing officer fails to exercise that care and causes a crash, the public agency that employs them can be held responsible for resulting injuries.

California’s Vehicle Code Section 21651 requires drivers on a designated one-way street to travel only in the authorized direction. A driver who allegedly goes against traffic, as reported in this incident, creates a serious hazard for oncoming vehicles, pedestrians, and public transit. When a wrong-way violation triggers a pursuit or collision, the fleeing driver can be held liable for the injuries and damage that follow, even after leaving the scene.
