A big rig driver suffered major injuries early Friday morning when the tractor-trailer crashed off an Interstate 80 bridge near Floriston, California, leaving the truck’s cab dangling roughly 80 feet above the roadway below. The driver was reportedly ejected from the cab during the crash and had to be flown to a hospital for treatment. The truck’s trailer overturned and completely blocked the eastbound lanes of the highway near the California-Nevada border. Emergency crews worked for hours to secure the wreckage and reopen the critical mountain corridor to traffic.
According to ABC7 News, citing the California Highway Patrol, the single-vehicle crash was reported around 10:45 a.m. on eastbound I-80 near Floriston in Nevada County. CHP said Care Flight was called to transport the injured driver, and eastbound lanes were shut down for what officials described as a ‘long-term’ closure while Caltrans crews worked to detach the cab from the overturned trailer. South Tahoe Now reported that traffic was rerouted at Hirschdale Road for much of the day before lanes reopened overnight. The cause of the crash has not yet been released as CHP’s Truckee office continues to investigate.

Major-injury crash leaves big rig dangling from bridge on California interstate
California Vehicle Code 22406 caps the speed of big rigs, truck tractors, and other heavy commercial vehicles at 55 mph on California highways, even on stretches where cars are permitted to travel faster. Trucking companies and drivers who exceed this limit, especially on mountain grades and bridges like the I-80 corridor near Floriston, can be held liable when excessive speed contributes to a rollover or loss of control. Investigators typically review a truck’s electronic logging data and black box to determine whether speed was a factor in a crash like this one.
California Vehicle Code 27315, the state’s mandatory seat belt law, requires drivers and passengers of commercial vehicles to be properly restrained while the vehicle is in motion. When a driver is ejected during a crash, as reportedly happened in this collision, investigators and insurance companies often examine whether the seat belt was in use and whether it functioned properly. A failure to comply with 27315, or a defective restraint system, can become a significant factor in determining liability and damages in the resulting claim.
