Semi-Truck Driver Killed, Passenger Hurt in I-80 Crash Near Donner Pass in Truckee

A big rig driver died and a passenger was injured Wednesday morning after their semi-truck left Interstate 80 near the Donner Pass Road off-ramp in Truckee, California Highway Patrol says. The truck went off the right shoulder, went through a roadside fence, and came to rest in a ditch near a wilderness area close to the Truckee River. The driver was found unconscious in the cab, while the passenger reported feeling light-headed and was taken to a hospital by Truckee Fire personnel. CHP, CalFire, Truckee Fire, Truckee Police, and other agencies responded to the scene, and the No. 2 lane was closed for recovery operations.

ABC10 reported the crash citing the California Highway Patrol, which logged the incident as a fatal solo-vehicle collision on westbound I-80 at the Donner Pass Road off-ramp in Truckee at approximately 9:28 a.m. CHP dispatch records reviewed independently confirm that the driver was unresponsive at the scene while a passenger in the cab was transported to a hospital after reporting light-headedness. The agency’s public incident log lists the case as a “1144-Fatality” call, and lane closures remained in effect for vehicle recovery hours after the crash. Names of those involved had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon.
