One person had to be cut free from an Audi SUV late Monday night after the vehicle slammed into the back of a semi-truck that was parked on the right shoulder of the northbound 5 Freeway at Roxford Street in Sylmar, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported at about 10:31 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, just north of the 405 Freeway split.
AIR7 video broadcast by ABC7 showed the back corner of the trailer punched through the SUV’s windshield and into the passenger compartment; the airbags had deployed. CHP told ABC7 that a witness said the semi-truck was parked on the right shoulder at the time of the collision. One person was freed from the wreckage by firefighters and taken to a hospital; their condition was not released. KTLA reported the same account. Two right lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway were closed while officers investigated. No arrest or citation has been reported, and CHP has not said whether the truck was legally stopped.

California Vehicle Code § 21718 generally prohibits stopping, parking or leaving a vehicle standing on a freeway, with narrow exceptions such as a genuine emergency or a disabled vehicle. Where a tractor-trailer is left on the shoulder, that section is often central to who is at fault.
California Civil Code § 1714 makes every person responsible for injuries caused by their lack of ordinary care. In a crash involving a commercial truck, that duty can extend beyond the driver to the motor carrier responsible for the rig, its lighting, its reflective markings and where it was left.
