Driver Killed After Car Plunges Off Grand Avenue Overpass in Downtown Los Angeles
A driver died early Friday morning after his car crashed through a guardrail on the Upper Grand Avenue overpass and plunged an estimated 40 to 50 feet onto Lower Grand Avenue below in Downtown Los Angeles. The vehicle landed upside down near the parking garage entrance for the Walt Disney Concert Hall and caught fire after the fall. The 30-year-old man, who police say was the only person inside the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. It remains unclear what caused him to lose control before the vehicle broke through the railing.
According to ABC7 Los Angeles, the crash happened just after 2:30 a.m. on Upper Grand Avenue, sending the car plummeting onto the roadway below. MyNewsLA reported that an LAPD spokesperson confirmed the driver, described as a man in his 30s, died in the crash, and that the vehicle was later identified as a blue Mazda. Investigators have not said what led the driver to crash through the guardrail, and the cause of the collision remains under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
