Whittier, CA: Two Vehicles Crash Into Food Stand, Plunge Into Riverbed; 3 Hurt
A driver crashed into a food stand and struck several people before careening down an embankment into a riverbed near the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area on Sunday morning, September 6, 2026. Los Angeles County Fire Department crews responded to the scene on Rosemead Boulevard just south of Durfee Avenue around 10:40 a.m., where a black Honda and a white Tesla were found down in the riverbed. About ten minutes later, a second vehicle also went over the same embankment nearby. Three people were hospitalized, though it was not immediately clear whether they were patrons of the food stand or occupants of the vehicles.
According to ABC7 Los Angeles, firefighters carried out a water rescue to reach the vehicles down in the riverbed, though officials said additional details about the crash remained limited. KTLA reported that of the three people taken to the hospital, two were listed in moderate-to-critical condition and one suffered minor injuries, and that crews extricated a motorist from one of the vehicles before it could be pulled from the water. Neither outlet has said what caused the first driver to lose control, and no information about the identities of the drivers involved has been released. The investigation into the crash remains active.

California’s Basic Speed Law, Vehicle Code 22350, prohibits driving at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent given the weather, visibility, traffic and road conditions, even when that speed is within the posted limit.
