The Dallas Morning News reports that two families filed separate medical malpractice lawsuits in Dallas County over births at Medical City Weatherford. According to the complaints, one baby suffered a permanent brain injury during birth and another baby died weeks after being born. The suits name the hospital, its affiliated companies, an OB-GYN practice and two obstetricians. Both families seek more than $1 million in damages, per the report. Representatives for the hospital and the other defendants did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and these are allegations, not findings by a court.

The complaints allege that staff did not act on warning signs during labor, including a fetal heart rate concern, and that a pediatric team was not ready for the newborns. They also allege that medication to speed labor continued despite signs of distress, that a cesarean delivery was delayed, and that a breathing tube was misplaced during resuscitation. In general, a baby's heart rate pattern is one of the main ways care teams check whether the baby is getting enough oxygen during labor. When oxygen is low for too long, brain injury can result, which is why how quickly the team responds can matter. Whether anything went wrong here is for the court to decide.
The defendants will now be served and can respond in court, and the case may take a long time to resolve. Texas sets strict deadlines for medical negligence claims, including a pre-suit notice and an early expert report, so families who have questions should not wait. Parents can request the mother's and baby's medical records from the hospital, which is often a first step in understanding what happened. Every case depends on its own facts, and nothing here predicts any result. If you have questions, we offer a free consultation and charge no fee unless we win.
