What the Law Says

Washington’s DUI statute, RCW 46.61.502, prohibits driving while under the influence of alcohol or any drug. A person who is impaired and causes a crash may also face civil liability for the injuries that result.

RCW 46.61.522 defines vehicular assault, which covers causing substantial bodily harm while driving under the influence or in a reckless manner. Separately, RCW 46.61.100 requires drivers to keep to the right side of the road, which is relevant when a vehicle crosses the center line.
