A 21-year-old motorcyclist died Tuesday evening after a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Harrison Avenue Northwest and Greenwood Drive Southwest in west Olympia, Washington. Police say the rider was traveling eastbound on Harrison Avenue around 6 p.m. when he rear-ended a truck that was slowing to turn onto Greenwood Drive. The impact sent the motorcycle spinning into the westbound lanes, where it collided with a second truck. The motorcyclist, identified by the Thurston County Coroner’s Office as Hunter Faught, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to The Olympian, the driver of the first truck complained of a back injury but was not transported to a hospital, and the driver of the second truck was not hurt. Olympia Police Lt. Paul Lower told the outlet, “It’s just a very sad situation here. I hope the best for everybody involved.” Officers closed the intersection for several hours so collision reconstruction investigators could process the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

What the Law Says

Washington’s rules of the road require every driver to leave enough space to stop safely behind the vehicle ahead, and RCW 46.61.145 specifically prohibits following more closely than is reasonable given speed and traffic conditions. Investigators in cases like this examine whether a following driver had adequate stopping distance before a rear-end collision. Violating this statute can support a finding of negligence in a civil injury or wrongful death claim. Washington also applies pure comparative fault, so any negligence by other drivers involved can reduce, but not eliminate, a victim’s recovery.

When a crash proves fatal, RCW 4.20.010 allows a personal representative of the deceased’s estate to bring a wrongful death action against those responsible. Washington law lets surviving spouses, domestic partners, children, and in some cases parents recover for losses such as loss of financial support, love, and companionship. A wrongful death claim is separate from any criminal investigation into the crash and focuses on compensating the family for their loss. Families generally have three years from the date of death to file this type of claim in Washington.
