Two men were injured Monday night after a Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle ended in a rollover crash on southbound Interstate 5 near Lynnwood, Washington. The chase began just before 8 p.m. near a Home Depot at Airport Road and Highway 99 in Everett and continued onto the freeway before the vehicle entered the median and flipped over near 164th Street Southwest. Both men were taken to a hospital with what authorities described as minor injuries. The crash blocked the HOV lanes on southbound I-5 for more than an hour, backing up evening traffic through the corridor.

According to KING 5 Seattle, deputies spotted the stolen vehicle near Highway 99 in Everett and pursued it after the two men inside allegedly fled onto southbound I-5. FOX 13 Seattle reported that the vehicle rolled over after entering the median near 164th Street Southwest, and that the suspects will face arrest on suspicion of vehicle theft and eluding once they are medically cleared. No other vehicles or bystanders were reported injured in the crash. The Sheriff’s Office has not released the identities of the two men, and the incident remains under investigation.

What the Law Says

Washington law makes it a felony to willfully attempt to elude a pursuing marked police vehicle after being given a visual or audible signal to stop, under RCW 46.61.024. A high-speed flight like the one described in this crash can also expose the fleeing driver to civil liability for injuries the chase causes, both to occupants of the fleeing vehicle and to any bystanders or officers involved.

Washington follows a pure comparative fault rule under RCW 4.22.005, meaning an injured person’s own negligence — such as fleeing from law enforcement in a stolen vehicle — reduces, but does not automatically bar, their ability to recover damages from other at-fault parties. Courts apportion fault by percentage among everyone involved, which can significantly affect how any resulting injury claim is valued.
