A 21-year-old woman died and a Houston Police Department officer was hospitalized after a pickup truck struck a patrol vehicle on the Eastex Freeway in Houston on the night of September 30, 2026. According to the City of Houston, officers were blocking a lane of moving traffic for a hazard on the freeway when the driver of a maroon GMC 1500 hit a patrol vehicle. The impact pushed that vehicle into a second patrol unit. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the driver dead at the scene.
ABC13 Houston reported that the crash happened hours after an 18-wheeler carrying about 30,000 pounds of honey crashed and lost its load, and that crews had worked roughly four hours to clear that scene. ABC13 said the officer was hospitalized and is expected to recover, and that HPD is working to determine what led up to the crash. The City of Houston says the officer’s injuries were minor and that the investigation, handled by HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division, is continuing. The cause has not been officially determined.
