A crash involving an 18-wheeler and five other vehicles shut down the Dallas North Tollway in North Dallas on Friday morning, injuring three people. The semi-truck struck multiple vehicles and a retaining wall near Northwest Highway before rolling onto its side, according to authorities on scene. The truck’s saddle tanks ruptured in the crash, spilling an estimated 170 gallons of diesel fuel and prompting a HazMat response. All lanes of the tollway between Walnut Hill Lane and Northwest Highway remained closed for hours as crews cleared wreckage and cleaned up the spill.

NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reported that three people were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries and were listed in stable condition. The outlet reported the crash occurred around 11:08 a.m. Friday and that the North Texas Tollway Authority took control of the scene to oversee cleanup once emergency crews cleared the injured. FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth added that the truck’s saddle tanks ruptured, spilling roughly 170 gallons of diesel along with cooking oil and other fluids from the trailer. Dallas police were still investigating what caused the initial collision as of Friday afternoon, and no citations or names had been released.

What the Law Says

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.401 makes it unlawful to drive a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. When a commercial truck strikes multiple vehicles and a wall before overturning, investigators look at speed, following distance and load securement to determine whether the driver’s conduct crossed into reckless driving. A finding of recklessness can support both criminal citations and civil liability for the resulting injuries and property damage.

Because this crash involved six vehicles, fault may be shared among more than one driver. Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 33.001 applies the state’s proportionate responsibility rule, allowing an injured person to recover damages as long as their own share of fault does not exceed 50 percent, with any award reduced by their percentage of responsibility. This statute often governs how compensation is divided in multi-vehicle pileups like this one.
