A 20-year-old Brownfield woman was killed early Saturday morning when her SUV struck a pickup truck head-on while traveling the wrong way on U.S. Highway 62 in Terry County, Texas. The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. roughly half a mile southwest of County Road 670, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Halee Williams was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Trax northeast in the southbound lanes when she collided with a 2017 Ford F-150 pickup, causing her SUV to catch fire. The pickup’s driver suffered serious injuries and a passenger sustained minor injuries; both were taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock. DPS troopers are continuing to investigate what caused Williams to enter the wrong lanes.
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that DPS identified the deceased driver as Halee Williams, 20, of Brownfield, and named the pickup’s driver as 38-year-old Rodrigo Lopez of Denver City and the passenger as 32-year-old Breanna Cobbs of Hobbs, New Mexico. According to the outlet, neither Lopez nor Cobbs was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and it was not determined whether Williams was wearing hers. The newspaper reported that weather conditions were clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the collision. DPS said other factors that may have contributed to the crash were not immediately clear, and the investigation remains open.
