A 62-year-old Abilene man died Friday afternoon after suffering a suspected medical emergency behind the wheel, causing his SUV to leave the roadway in a rural stretch of Taylor County. The single-vehicle crash happened around 2:22 p.m. on State Highway 36 near mile marker 302, when the man’s 2004 Chevrolet Suburban veered off the highway and struck a barbed-wire fence and several trees. He was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Emergency crews rushed him to Hendrick Medical Center North in Abilene, where he was pronounced dead just over an hour later. No other injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
KTXS reported that the Texas Department of Public Safety identified the driver as Curtis Wayne Howard and said he is suspected of experiencing a medical issue that caused him to lose control of the vehicle. DPS said Howard was pronounced dead at 3:51 p.m. by an attending physician. A separate report by KTAB/BigCountryHomepage.com, which covered three fatal crashes across the Big Country region that day, confirmed the same details and said the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not released additional information about Howard’s underlying medical condition.

Abilene man dies after suspected medical emergency causes Taylor County crash
Texas law requires every driver to operate a vehicle with reasonable care and to maintain control at all times; a driver who negligently or recklessly loses control and endangers others can face liability under Transportation Code Section 545.401. While a sudden, unforeseeable medical emergency can serve as a legal defense in Texas, that defense generally requires proof the driver had no prior warning of the condition. Investigators look closely at a driver’s medical history and any prior symptoms to determine whether the emergency was truly unforeseeable. This distinction can be critical in any civil claim arising from a single-vehicle crash like this one.
When a crash results in a death, Texas’ Wrongful Death Act (Civil Practice and Remedies Code Chapter 71) allows a surviving spouse, children, or parents to pursue a claim for their losses. The law permits recovery of damages such as loss of companionship, mental anguish, and lost financial support. A related survival statute also allows the deceased’s estate to recover for pain, suffering, and expenses incurred before death. These protections exist regardless of whether the at-fault party is another driver or, in some cases, a third party whose negligence contributed to the crash.
