A fiery rollover crash on Highway 2 near Flume Canyon Road outside Wrightwood killed four people and left two others critically injured early Friday, September 4, 2026. California Highway Patrol says a 2016 Hyundai Veloster carrying six occupants — one more than its five-seat capacity — veered off the mountain roadway around 1:30 a.m., rolled down a steep embankment and struck a utility pole. Five of the six people inside were ejected from the vehicle; four died at the scene, and rescue crews used cable systems to reach the two survivors, who were airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. All six occupants, ages 19 to 21 and from the Wrightwood area, were not wearing seat belts.

CBS Los Angeles reported that CHP’s preliminary investigation found alcohol was likely a contributing factor in the crash. NBC Los Angeles reported that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has identified three of the four victims as Jason Potter, 19, Nevaeh Harper, 20, and Rebekah Cabral-Gonzalez, 21; the fourth victim’s identity had not been released as of the latest reporting. CHP’s Antelope Valley office continues to investigate the exact cause of the crash.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 23152 makes it illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher. When alcohol is found to be a contributing factor in a fatal crash like this one, the driver can face DUI manslaughter charges in addition to civil liability for the deaths and injuries caused. Investigators have said alcohol is likely a factor in the Wrightwood crash, though the investigation remains open.

California Vehicle Code 27315, the mandatory seat belt law, requires all vehicle occupants to wear a properly fastened seat belt. Failure to buckle up is a major reason ejection injuries and deaths occur in rollover crashes, and it can also affect how comparative fault is allocated in a civil injury claim. None of the six occupants in the Wrightwood crash were wearing seat belts, according to CHP’s preliminary findings.
