Four people were killed and two others were critically injured early Friday, September 4, 2026, after a car went off Angeles Crest Highway near Flume Canyon Road outside Wrightwood, California. The California Highway Patrol says the vehicle, a Hyundai Veloster carrying six occupants, may have struck a traffic pole before rolling off the roadway and coming to rest in a meadow area below. Rescue crews reportedly needed roughly 40 feet of cable to reach the wreckage on the steep terrain. All four people who died were ejected from the vehicle; the two survivors were transported to a hospital in critical condition.
ABC7 Los Angeles reports the crash was called in just before 1:30 a.m. along the winding mountain highway near the Los Angeles-San Bernardino county line. CHP has not released the names of the victims, and investigators say it is still unclear what led the driver to leave the roadway. MyNewsLA.com additionally reported that only one of the surviving occupants was confirmed to be wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The CHP investigation into the cause of the crash remains active.
