A pedestrian was struck and killed in a suspected hit-and-run crash in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on the 1300 block of Erringer Road in Simi Valley, California, on the afternoon of Monday, August 31, 2026. Police say a driver pulled up to the storefront, struck the pedestrian, then backed away and collided with another vehicle that was being fueled at the gas pumps before fleeing the scene. The vehicle was found abandoned nearby, and Simi Valley Police arrested a 40-year-old local man on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death. The victim, identified as 55-year-old Juan Huerta Rosales, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say the investigation remains active.

According to KTLA, the collision occurred around 4:15 p.m. when the driver’s vehicle struck Rosales as he stood near the store entrance, after which the driver fled on foot into the surrounding neighborhood. News Channel 3-12 (KEYT) reported that officers located suspect Abel Alvaro and took him into custody without incident, and that he was booked into Ventura County Jail on a felony hit-and-run charge. Both outlets reported that Alvaro and Rosales did not know each other. The Simi Valley Police Department Traffic Bureau is asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 20001 makes it a crime for a driver involved in a collision that results in injury or death to leave the scene without stopping, identifying themselves, and rendering reasonable assistance. A violation causing death or permanent, serious injury is chargeable as a felony and can carry a state prison sentence. The suspect in this case has been booked on a felony hit-and-run charge tied to this statute.

California Vehicle Code 20003 requires a driver involved in a crash that injures or kills someone to provide their name, address, vehicle registration, and driver’s license information, and to render reasonable aid, including arranging transportation to a hospital if needed. Failing to do so compounds the criminal exposure a fleeing driver already faces under Section 20001. These duties exist because leaving an injured pedestrian without aid or identification can turn a survivable injury into a fatal one, and they matter for any civil claim connected to a hit-and-run crash.
