The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the pursuit and crash

A 15-year-old girl was arrested early Friday morning after a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office pursuit ended in a three-vehicle crash on El Centro Road in Sacramento, California. Deputies said they spotted a car driving without its lights on near West El Camino Avenue and Interstate 80 and tried to pull it over, but the teenage driver fled. The pursuit ended when her car collided with two other vehicles. One of the other drivers was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while the teen was also treated and later booked into juvenile hall.

According to FOX40 Sacramento, the driver who was hospitalized in critical condition is now stable and expected to recover, while the driver of the third vehicle was not hurt. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said the pursuit began after deputies noticed the vehicle traveling without headlights. ABC10 separately reported that the chase ended with the three-car crash on El Centro Avenue, sending two people to the hospital and the teenage driver into custody. The Sheriff’s Office has not released the names of the injured drivers, and the investigation remains active.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 2800.1 makes it a crime to willfully flee or evade a pursuing peace officer’s vehicle after the officer signals with a red light and siren. Deputies say the 15-year-old driver ignored an attempted stop and kept driving, which is what set off the pursuit that ended in the three-vehicle crash. The fleeing driver’s own conduct in refusing to stop is central to determining fault for the collision that followed.

When a pursuit like this one results in injury to another person, California Vehicle Code 2800.3 elevates the offense to felony evading causing injury. That heightened liability can support a civil claim against the fleeing driver for the harm suffered by the other motorists caught in the crash. Because the driver was a minor, any recovery may also need to address a parent’s or guardian’s liability under California law.
