A pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a marked Pasadena Police Department cruiser on the night of Sunday, August 30, 2026. The collision happened around 10 p.m. near the intersection of Marengo Avenue and Washington Boulevard in Pasadena, California. Surveillance camera footage captured the moment the police SUV struck the pedestrian, who was standing in the street as the vehicle approached without its emergency lights or siren activated. The impact threw the man onto the hood of the cruiser before he landed in the roadway. The officer stopped immediately and rendered aid until paramedics arrived and transported the pedestrian to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

KTLA, which first published the surveillance footage, reported that Pasadena Police Chief Communications Officer Lisa Derderian confirmed the Aug. 30 crash near Marengo Avenue and Washington Boulevard. ColoradoBoulevard.net reported that Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris confirmed the incident and asked anyone with information to contact the department. Neither the pedestrian nor the officer involved has been publicly identified. The investigation by the department’s Major Accident Investigation Team remains active, and no citations or discipline have been announced as of this report.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code Section 21056 makes clear that even when a police vehicle qualifies for certain exemptions under Section 21055, the exemption does not relieve the officer of the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons using the road, nor does it protect the officer from the consequences of an arbitrary or reckless disregard for public safety. Footage of this crash reportedly shows the cruiser’s lights and siren were not activated at the time of impact, which is a key factor in whether any exemption could even apply. If an officer breaches that duty of care, the public entity that employs them can be held liable for resulting injuries.

Because this collision involved a city police vehicle, any injury claim against the City of Pasadena is governed by California’s Government Claims Act. Government Code Section 911.2 requires that a formal claim be presented to the public entity within six months of the incident, far shorter than the two-year statute of limitations that applies to most private at-fault drivers. Missing this deadline can permanently bar an injured pedestrian from recovering compensation, making prompt legal guidance especially important in crashes involving government vehicles.

This summary is general information, not legal advice. Every case depends on its specific facts.
