A 55-year-old Orland man riding a motorcycle was killed early Friday, September 4, 2026, in a collision at the rural intersection of County Road 20 and County Road P in Glenn County. The California Highway Patrol says the crash was reported shortly before 4 a.m., in full darkness, well before sunrise. Emergency crews and Glenn County Sheriff’s Office units responded within minutes, but the rider suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Investigators say he was not wearing a helmet. His name has not been released while authorities notify his family.

According to KRCR, the CHP reported that the rider was traveling west on County Road 20 on a 2025 Jiangmen QiPai motorcycle at what officers described as excessive speed as he approached County Road P. A 30-year-old Chico woman was driving a 2018 Kia Niro north on County Road P through the same intersection. KRCR reported that the motorcycle allegedly failed to stop at the intersection and struck the side of the SUV. The station reported no injuries to the SUV driver, and CHP investigators are still working to determine whether drugs or alcohol played any role.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 22350, the Basic Speed Law, makes it unlawful to drive at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent for the weather, visibility, traffic and road conditions at the time. On unlit rural county roads before dawn, a speed that would be legal at midday can still violate this section. CHP investigators routinely evaluate the Basic Speed Law when a rider approaches a controlled intersection too fast to stop. Speed findings also shape how fault is apportioned among everyone involved.

California Vehicle Code 27803 requires every motorcycle rider and passenger to wear a helmet that meets federal safety standards while the motorcycle is in motion. The statute applies statewide, on county roads as well as highways. Riding without a helmet does not by itself excuse another driver’s negligence, but California’s comparative fault rules allow a jury to weigh it when it contributed to the injuries. Helmet use is one of the first details CHP records in a fatal motorcycle report.
