On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance carrying a patient in serious condition collided with another vehicle in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. The crash happened at approximately 1:57 p.m. at the intersection of Boyle Avenue and 4th Street, in the 300 block of South Boyle Avenue. Three LAFD personnel and a civilian in the other vehicle suffered injuries described as minor, while the original patient remained in serious condition as the ambulance continued toward a hospital. The intersection was blocked off as additional fire crews and police responded to the scene.

According to KTLA, the Fire Department reported five total patients at the scene: the patient who was already being transported, the three LAFD crew members, and the occupant of the other vehicle, a red four-door sedan that sustained significant front-end damage. ABC7 Los Angeles similarly reported that the ambulance was escorting a critically ill patient when the collision occurred. Neither outlet reported the cause of the crash, and authorities had not publicly identified the driver of the other vehicle as of this report. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code Section 21055 exempts the driver of an authorized emergency vehicle, such as an LAFD ambulance responding to or transporting a patient, from certain traffic laws while using a siren and emergency lighting. However, Section 21056 makes clear that this exemption does not relieve the driver of the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of others, and it does not protect the driver or a public entity from the consequences of a reckless disregard for that safety.

California Vehicle Code Section 17001 allows a public entity, such as the City of Los Angeles, to be held liable for injuries proximately caused by the negligent or wrongful operation of a motor vehicle by an employee acting within the scope of employment. This statute can come into play when a city-owned ambulance is involved in a collision that injures civilians or emergency personnel, and it is part of what determines whether a claim against the city may proceed.
