A motorcyclist was killed early Thursday morning after running a red light and colliding with an SUV at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Villa Park Avenue in Long Beach, California. According to the Long Beach Police Department, the crash was reported at approximately 1:44 a.m. when a man riding a 2026 Honda motorcycle traveled south on Atlantic Avenue and ran a red light, striking a 2025 Acura SUV that was making a left turn from Villa Park Avenue onto northbound Atlantic Avenue on a green light. Officers gave the motorcyclist immediate medical aid at the scene until Long Beach Fire Department paramedics arrived, but he later died at the hospital. The SUV driver was also taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition.

Patch reported that the collision marks the 37th traffic fatality recorded by LBPD so far in 2026. The outlet, citing police, said investigators are still working to determine whether speed was a contributing factor in the crash. The motorcyclist’s identity was being withheld while the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner works to notify his next of kin, and LBPD’s Collision Investigation Detail is asking anyone with information to contact Detective Johnson at 562-570-7132.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code Section 21453 requires drivers facing a steady red traffic signal to stop at the marked limit line or before entering the intersection and remain stopped until the signal turns green. This statute applies equally to motorcyclists and directly addresses the type of violation LBPD says caused this crash. A driver who runs a red light and causes a collision can be held liable for the resulting injuries and losses.

California’s Basic Speed Law, Vehicle Code Section 22350, prohibits driving at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent given traffic, weather, and roadway conditions, regardless of any posted limit. LBPD says investigators are still examining whether speed contributed to this crash. When excessive speed combines with a red-light violation, it can increase both the severity of a collision and the potential liability of the at-fault driver.
