A 32-year-old Lompoc man was killed the afternoon of August 25 when his Honda Pilot collided with a big-rig truck tractor on Highway 1 near Jalama Road, about four and a half miles south of Lompoc. The impact destroyed the SUV and left the truck jackknifed across the roadway, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck tractor’s driver suffered minor injuries but declined further medical attention. Both lanes of Highway 1 were shut down for hours while crews cleared the wreckage and investigators documented the scene.
According to Noozhawk, the California Highway Patrol’s Buellton office identified the victim as Victor Uriarte Madrid and reported that the highway was closed between Highway 246 and Highway 101 for approximately four hours before reopening around 6:45 p.m. CHP investigators are still working to determine what caused the truck tractor to jackknife and collide with the oncoming SUV. Authorities have asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the Buellton CHP office.

Bill Macfadyen: Highway 1 Big-Rig Collision That Killed Lompoc Man Is a Fatal Attraction
California’s Basic Speed Law makes it illegal to drive faster than is safe for current conditions, regardless of the posted limit. Highway 1 south of Lompoc is a rural two-lane route where sharp curves, wind and cross traffic demand reduced speeds, especially for heavy trucks. When a big rig cannot control its speed for the roadway ahead, the consequences of a collision multiply because of its size and weight. Investigators will look at whether the truck’s speed contributed to the loss of control that preceded this crash.
California’s Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require commercial trucking companies to maintain their vehicles and ensure drivers operate them safely on public highways. These rules cover brake systems, load securement and driver fitness, all of which can affect a big rig’s ability to stay in its lane. If mechanical failure or improper loading caused the truck tractor to jackknife, the trucking company and its driver could bear responsibility for the crash. The CHP investigation will help determine whether these safety standards were followed.
