A three-vehicle crash involving a big rig closed part of southbound State Route 14 in Lancaster late Saturday night, sending two people to the hospital and leading to one arrest. The collision happened just before 11 p.m. near Avenue H, in the Antelope Valley area of northern Los Angeles County. According to reports, an initial two-car collision left a vehicle disabled in the travel lanes before a big rig struck it, launching it roughly 50 feet down an embankment. California Highway Patrol has not released the identity of the person arrested or said what charges, if any, they face. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

KTLA reported that CHP confirmed three vehicles were involved — a big rig and two passenger cars — and that two people were transported to area hospitals, though their conditions were not immediately disclosed. The outlet noted that the cause of the crash remained under investigation as of Sunday, and that officials had not released details about the person arrested at the scene. A separate report indicated that southbound SR-14 lanes near Avenue G were temporarily closed while crews cleared the wreckage. Investigators have not said whether the big rig driver, the arrested individual, or another factor contributed to the initial collision.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 21703 prohibits following another vehicle more closely than is reasonable given speed, traffic, and road conditions. When a big rig fails to leave enough distance to stop or steer around a stalled or disabled vehicle ahead, the truck driver and the trucking company can be held liable for the resulting injuries. This rule carries particular weight on freeways, where high speeds and the long stopping distances of large commercial trucks make following distance critical to preventing rear-end and override collisions.

Vehicle Code 22350, California’s Basic Speed Law, requires every driver to operate at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for existing conditions, including traffic backups, disabled vehicles, or reduced visibility on a freeway. A commercial truck driver who fails to slow in time to avoid a hazard ahead can be found negligent under this statute even when driving at or below the posted limit. Investigators typically review a truck’s data recorder and speed at impact when a big rig strikes another vehicle.
